Appearance

    Coαт
The main overall colour of Auriella's fur is a creamy-white shade. Her coat tainted with sprinkles of caramel brown. Along her muzzle is a faint streak of honey-coloured fur. A slender smudge down her back darkens to an almost-black charcoal brown. Her tail is mainly covered by the same dark shade. In some places along her back, her fur is a soft grey tint and it mingles with the chocolate brown streak. Her senses are sharp and she has a light, silent, dainty step so as not to startle any prey. She is marginally smaller than the average female wolf but if anything, her personality makes up for it. She nearly always wears a radiant, beaming smile on her elfin face. She has good stamina and speed - strength being the department she is more lacking in, but she is still a formidable, determined hunter and has a fair amount of muscle for taking down the prey.

Her beautiful eyes are a deep ochre color with a ring of a bright golden shade around the pupil.

Persona

    Personαliтч
Auriella, above all else, is loyal. She would surrender herself for those she loves without second thought. She is a thoughtful character, considering others’ feelings and trying to do what is best for everyone. She cares for those close to her. She is not afraid to speak her mind - unless she knows she could hurt another's feelings. Auriella dislikes being told what to do and is an independent wolf. She knows the importance of working with others, but she sometimes her rebellious streak can be shown, as she goes with her own views rather than someone else's. When she’s alone she ponders her thoughts and does not like to be disturbed. Auriella is objective and understanding; a good listener. She is calm and calculative, rarely missing a thing, and is inquisitive by nature. Despite her age, Auriella's innocence is quite alike to that of a pup's, even though she is much more intellectual than she lets on. She can be high-spirited at times, loving a good laugh or a good game and is nearly always smiling, trying to make light of any situation. Her bubbly personality usually rubs off others, but she makes sure that she doesn’t go too far so as to anger anyone.

Auriella has a quiet nature. She doesn’t talk much about herself and prefers not to, she has made an effort to start fresh and doesn't particularly want to drag up the past with anyone. Auriella doesn’t care much what anyone else thinks of her, but won’t do anything impulsive or crazy; she’s quite level-headed and always thinks her actions through, thinking of what consequences they may have. Sometimes she feels she has been put on the spot and behaves uncertainly and tensely. When she feels uncomfortable she generally tends to fidget, or shift position often enough or tap her tail on the ground. She can be very slow to trust anyone. But when she does, her trust barely falters. That is, unless there is a reason not to trust someone.

One of her more undesirable characteristics is that she can be spiteful when she feels like it. But there are nearly always reasons behind this. Mainly it would be because the other has done something to hurt her – mentally or physically - and she doesn’t want anything to do with them. However, sometimes, she simply doesn't feel like being nice, and she can't stop the words from coming out. When she does say something nasty for no reason, the guilt would hit her directly after the words came out. If they come back to her and apologize, she easily forgives them, but never forgets and is always watchful and cautious thereafter. Sometimes, she finds it quite difficult to hold her tongue, which she feels is a terrible curse because she certainly has plenty to say. Auriella can be tongue-tied at times, but had a strong opinion on most matters and usually gets her point across. Auriella’s gaze can be unnerving to some and she uses that to her advantage. She isn’t the type to hate anyone, but there are a select few that she simply doesn’t get along with. She is driven and determined, not often backing down when faced with a challenge.

    Feαrs
Fast moving water, though shallow stretches of river are no challenge to her.
      Ice.

    Liƙes
      Snow.
      Cool weather.
      Hunting.

    Disliƙes
Being told what to think/ what to do consistently.
      Heat.

Relations

    Fαmilч
      Trista - grandmother.
      Ciar - grandfather.
      Thea - mother.
      Alaric - brother.
      Aeron - brother.
      Daragh - Father figure.

    Friends
Auriella is new to the area so she has not come across many others and so hasn't got many friends. However, she hopes that should change soon.

    Enemies
Auriella isn't the type to have enemies, but there are a select few that she simply doesn't get along with. From her past experiences, she would count Trista and maybe even her own brother, Aeron, as her enemies.

    Mαтe or Puρs
Neither; Auriella has never come to the stage of having a family.

    Crush
No one has caught her attention.

    Hιsтorч
Auriella’s mother was part of a small pack that resided just a short distance beyond the mountains north of the Hemlock Creek Pack’s current residence. They were ruled by five year old leaders, nearing the end of their reign, Trista and Ciar. Trista was a bitter female when it came to rule-breakers; she never let anything slip by and the entire pack lived in fear of her. Ciar wasn’t quite as uptight, but was a strong, formidable wolf, which was probably why Trista chose him as her mate – not the other way around – and Ciar was just happy to oblige. Thea was their daughter from two years previous, and was a low-ranking female. She was also to be an inexperienced mother. The minute Trista found out that she had broken the rules and that she was to have pups come spring, and she was rampant. The alphas were expecting pups too; they weren’t going to stand for someone else taking up space and attention with their pups. It was a cold, frosty morning in early spring when three pups were born to Thea; two males and a female. She named the males Aeron and Alaric and the female Auriella. They were born before Trista’s litter and so got plenty of attention from the rest of the pack, Thea’s siblings. The alpha female’s two pups were born roughly a month later, a male and a female; Finn and Melva. The pack, despite the fact that there weren’t meant to be extra pups to care for, took good care of all the pups – both Thea’s and the alpha female’s. But Trista couldn’t just stand by and see her daughter’s pups getting more attention than her own.

All five pups grew up together like siblings, despite the alpha female’s attempts to further shun the little family that had grown, without permission, within her pack. Finn and Melva grew up with a detached mother, a mother that let hatred get in the way of her love for her pups. The summer came without joy for Finn and Melva, Trista seemed almost to be losing control over her pack. Auriella, Aeron and Alaric were prospering into fine yearlings as Thea’s mother watched seethingly from the edge. When Thea told her pups that they wouldn’t be staying here much longer, they knew that she was preparing them for what would happen next. The whole pack seemed on edge as the summer neared its end. No one more so than Trista. Thea had been receiving a fair amount of abuse from Trista, Auriella could see bruises appearing with no explanations, cuts, fur ripped out. Auriella couldn’t stand and see her mother so beaten up, but how could she possibly confront Trista? Auriella helped her mother as much as she could, but he sank deeper into depression and Auriella could only do so much. Thea stopped eating and the pack didn’t take notice. Alaric was the only one that seemed to worry as much as her. It seemed Thea had fallen into the rank of omega.

The first snow of the impending winter fell as Trista began to gather her troops in an effort to regain control over them. She was going to show her daughter exactly who was in charge. Thea and Auriella were resting not far from the den-site and Aeron and Alaric were nearby. Auriella heard wolves approaching and alerted her mother. Thea woke up and told her to run. Auriella ran, but she ran to her brothers, knowing that she couldn’t leave them. She found only Alaric. Aeron had gone missing. Auriella could not understand where he could have gone. She ran back to Thea and found her pinned under the weight of Trista and surrounded by the rest of the pack. She knew immediately that they were all in danger.

“Ella? I told you to run!” her mother whimpered, her voice muffled under Trista’s fur. Her tail was curled between her legs, her belly face up in a sign of submission that Auriella had never seen her show before. Her mother used to be so calm and proud. Trista had reduced her to a whimpering mess. Auriella’s gaze held hatred for the female that once ruled her. Never again. She would never touch her family after this day.

“How could I leave you and Aeron? I couldn’t find him,” Auriella replied calmly, edging closer, Alaric at her side.

Her brother’s voice broke out in the silence of the clearing. “You can’t leave me, sister. Because I have left you.” She turned her head to see Aeron standing, a shadow in the midst of the others. He had chosen his side. Auriella’s eyes narrowed in abhorrence and her face contorted in anger.

“So you chose those things instead of your own family?” she said lividly as she took a step toward them, indicating what the [/i]things[/i] were. This received a snarl from Trista. “Our family means nothing to you?" she continued, her voice echoing against the trees, returning her words as if the were agreeing with her. She felt her confidence grow like a dawning sun.

“Who cares? You aren’t family. We are. You’re a mistake,” Trista sneered, stepping down off Thea and glancing down at her as she spoke, “You all are!” She finished by throwing a peircingly angry look at Auriella and Alaric.

Thea scrambled to her feet and stumbled over to her two cubs, her eyes were wide in fear. She was limping. Trista stepped in front of her daughter. “I’d like to see you get away on that leg, my dear,” she spat.

A growl sounded beside Auriella. Before she could stop him, Alaric lunged at Trista, teeth bared and brown eyes flashing. Trista only grunted as she fell aside with the weight of Alaric on top of her. Her teeth flashed as she bit deeply into Alaric’s shoulder. He yelped, pulling away, but Trista’s solid grip kept him. Auriella jumped at her, laws snapping and it was enough to make her loosen her grip. Auriella pulled her brother away, nudging him ahead of her as the pack that used to care for them advanced on them, dark smiles and bared teeth.

They ran north, escaping the grasp of Trista, away from the place they had all grown up in, and leaving Aeron. He was the same as the rest of them; they had no loyalty to their own and only stay because of their fear. Auriella couldn’t understand what had happened to her brother. But she focused on helping Thea and Alaric. She was the only one of them that had gotten away unscathed. When they got a safe distance from the territory, Thea and Alaric rested as Auriella went to hunt. She had only been out on a hunt a few times before, but never actually taking part. She had seen how it was done. She tracked down a rabbit and caught it fairly easily, but she didn’t have time to be proud of herself because she knew that Thea and Alaric were in bad condition. She was making her way back to them when a bright, yellow flower caught her eye. She had once seen of the pack, chewing its petals to a pulp and then applying it to another’s wound. It was marigold, she was sure. She dropped her catch for a moment and plucked a few of the flowers, she then picked her rabbit up off the ground and went back to Thea and her brother.

Alaric ripped the rabbit open the minute she set down, but Thea wouldn’t eat. Auriella chewed up the marigold petals. She then went over to Alaric and began to put it over his wound.

“What is that?” he grumbled through a mouthful of rabbit, frowning as he looked at her.

“Marigold. It’ll stop the infection or something, I hope. Save some of that for Thea,” she replied, brow furrowed as she chewed up more petals. His wound was deep. She cleansed it as best she could before applying the pulp. She hoped it would work.

Thea was in a worse state of mind than her brother, and worse than Auriella thought she was. She refused to eat the meat Auriella brought to her. Auriella couldn’t understand it. She began to examine how bad the wounds were. There was a large gash along her mother’s leg, it was deeper than Alaric’s wound and was still bleeding. The area around it was inflamed. The wound was unclean. Auriella winced. There were also many cuts on her face, not quite as deep, but they were infected. Auriella realised that she didn’t have enough marigold for the extent of Thea’s wounds, but began to apply it anyway. She started with her leg. Thea was shaking and Auriella realised that she had caught an infection. Her mother had a fever. She whined. Her mother was shaking uncontrollably, shudders running along her flank, her fur was almost wet with sweat. Auriella called for Alaric. He limped over, and his eyes widened with concern. He looked to Auriella.

“What should we do?” he asked, his voice was shaky.

Auriella shook her head fretfully. “We have to get her something to drink. We need to get to the river.” Auriella nudged Thea and she and Alaric supported her and struggled to the water source. It wasn’t far away, but by the time they reached it Auriella knew that her mother’s mind was being affected by the fever; she could see that Thea wasn’t able to focus, to think.

They brought her down the bank and into the shallows. Auriella told her to take a drink and helped her, nudging her comfortingly even though she knew that her mother would hardly notice. She was too far gone. Thea was slipping away fast. They assisted her out of the water to the bank. Auriella didn’t know what to do.

The marigolds weren’t in abundance at this time of year. They were quickly dying with the change in temperature. She knew that she had been lucky to come across a patch of them. She stood up; frantically searching for something that she recognised that might help Thea. She couldn’t find anything. She returned dolefully and lay beside Thea, hoping her warmth would sooth her.

It was truly winter now. Another sprinkling of snow fell down on them blissfully, calmly. Auriella could almost feel the life slipping from her mother’s body. She and Alaric stayed with her until the end, but there was nothing they could do for her. Her shivers stopped abruptly as she succumbed to the cold, to her hunger and to her sickness. Auriella could only blame herself for what happened, that she didn’t try hard enough to save Thea. She hadn’t stopped Trista when she had seen her mother beaten up. She should have done something. It was wrong. Her mother was still young. She was so vulnerable.

“Thea?” she murmured, hoping for a reply.

“Auriella, Alaric you two are so good to stay with me,” Thea choked, her voice barely audible. “I’m sorry I was such a bad mother to you. My skills only show what became of Aeron.”

Auriella shushed her, trying to soothe her. “It’s all right. You don’t need to worry.”

“I know,” Thea smiled weakly, just barely a twitch in her fading face. “Take care of yourselves. Thank you.” Her last words were so soft that Auriella and Alaric could barely hear them even with their ears so close. They knew that she was gone.

Auriella’s throat was tight. She couldn’t howl in mourning; she couldn’t show Trista that she had hurt her, that she was a wolf too and that she had feelings.

Alaric sat up and nudged Auriella, coaxing her to stand. “Should we bury her?” he asked quietly, his face contorted with grief, his words trembling.

Auriella shook her head. “The ground would be too hard and we would be wasting our energy for a shallow pit. And I don’t want her to be under there,” Auriella faltered, her voice hoarse and raspy. “I think we should drag her up the bank a bit so floodwaters can’t get at her. Then leave her peacefully.” She took a mouthful of her mother’s cold, coarse fur. She and Alaric tugged her uphill and lay her under a tree.

Auriella bit her lip. “Alaric, she looks like she’s sleeping.”

He nodded, looking away. “Let’s go. Please.”

Auriella and Alaric circled the territory they had once called home, making their way west and heading toward the other side of the mountains. They didn’t get far before the harsh winter set in. They had decided that they would cross onto the other side of the river instead of going around the mountains to get as far away as they could from Trista. Ice had long since taken over the normally gushing currents; in order to cross, they would have to face their fear of water. Every wolf in the pack had grown up with a fear of the flowing, trap that was the river. Elders had many a story of how many of their leaders had been victims of it’s forces, dragged underneath before they could think about the cold of the water that would torment their minds should it allow them to live to tell the tale or drown them. Water, they said, could be your greatest enemy, or your most refreshing friend. It gave life, but also took life.

Alaric was the first to step onto the ice. He took care of where he placed his paws, and beckoned for Auriella to follow. Auriella stepped onto solid coldness a few metres downstream from her brother. Her courage grew when it took her weight without a crack, so she began to make her way across, level with Alaric.

A crack echoed in her ears, making every muscle in her body tense up.

At first, she thought the cracking had sounded from beneath her, but then she heard Alaric’s whimper. The ice cracked again. She glanced over at him, hoping that the ice wasn’t cracking under him. She only caught a final glimpse of his wide brown eyes, filled with dread, before he crashed down under. A dark shape danced under her, passing along with the cold current. All that separated her from her brother was a shield of ice. Auriella followed his form, skidding along the slippy surface of the ice as she raced after him. It was foolish, running on the ice - she knew it - but Auriella couldn’t stand there and do nothing like she had with Thea.

She barely noticed that the ice was thinning the further she ran.

Alaric’s shape was slipping away from her. The distance between her and him stretched, mocking her slowness compared to it. She stopped, despairing. Her only family she had left was sliding from her grasp.

She was there, standing idle on the ice, and then she was gone.

The freezing water numbed her limbs immediately, making movement painful. Her senses were drowned and any movement not only made an aching pain shoot through her, but caused her to spin out of control. She shut her eyes to try and calm herself, to try and settle her churning stomach. She tried to accept that the river was claiming its victims. She was pulled deeper, deeper. She felt the pressure of the water on top of her tearing at her limbs, stretching them agonizingly and giving her a splitting headache. Then everything stopped, there was no pain, just emptiness, blackness, nothingness.

She was aware that there was heat warming her flank, but her hind legs were cold, wet. She was half-submerged in freezing water, but it wasn’t quite frozen here as it had been where she had fallen in. Her stinging eyes opened only to shut again at the blinding sun after darkness. Her eyes ached as they adjusted to the change. She didn’t hear someone plodding towards her, but she could feel vibrations in the ground beneath her as a dark form materialized in front her, a looming shadow against the sunlight.

“So you’ve come-to,” a deep voice rumbled. She felt warm breath on her face and she knew without opening her eyes that the other wolf was studying her, analysing her. She opened an eye hesitantly and was met with startling yellow eyes, peering into hers. She quickly pulled away, sitting up to only make her head spin so she fell heavily back down again with seering pain shooting through her momentarily. "I'd advise you not to move your left hind leg. You got a bad gash and the muscles are probably damaged.

      “I’m Daragh,” he explained.

“Auriella,” she responded tiredly, her voice raspy. Daragh nodded with a smiled and turned away. She heard his steps fading. Auriella had no idea where she was and how she was here. She groaned and rolled over, struggling to her feet and hauling herself clear of the water as quickly as she could. She glanced around, taking in her surroundings. There was a thick layer of snow halfway up her leg where she had dragged herself from the bank. Trudging through this would waste more energy than she had, but staying still was only going to make her cold, which would mean also wasting energy. Had Daragh abandoned her? Who was he? The old male hadn’t said anything. Had he saved her from the river? Had he just found her? She didn’t know.

      River. Water. Ice. Alaric.

Auriella sprung up. Panic shot through her, her leg felt like it was going to fall off at any moment. Her pain was followed with adrenaline. She ran to the water’s edge, numb to the pain, and glanced up and down the water. Where was Alaric? Her breaths came short as a knot rose in her throat. He had fallen through the ice. But so had she. Was he safe? Or had he drowned? She whimpered. Daragh must have heard her, because he came up beside her and pressed his grey flank against her.

      “Tell me,” he aid quietly.

“Alaric, my brother. He fell through the ice. I tried going after him, but the ice was too thin. Then I fell in too,” she whispered, her words quiet but clear. “He was all the family I had left.” She looked down to her paws and to the powder white snow that pooled around them. She shut her eyes tightly.

Daragh padded away and came back with a jack rabbit in his jaws. He dropped in front of Auriella. She didn’t look at him as she sat down to eat it in silence, feeling numb. He just watched her.

“I didn’t see him in the water,” he said finally, his brow furrowed thoughtfully, guilt lacing his tone.

Auriella finished the meal. She shook her head. “Thank you.” She wanted to avoid the subject of Alaric now. She knew it would only upset her.

Daragh showed her many things: how to hunt silently in the snow; how to track and animal with snow muffling any scents and smells. Her leg began to heal, and soon she had no pain, but just a limp. When spring came, he showed her different herbs, showing her things that could help fight infection, soothe nerves and even kill. Herbs were powerful things, he said, be careful of how you use them or you might abuse them.He showed her different hunting techniques. Eventually, she could put more and more pressure on her left leg and she could live up to her full hunting abilities that she had missed so. Auriella was just a yearling at that stage, but she took everything Daragh told her on board. Seasons passed by and Daragh became something like her father-figure, showing her many things that she wouldn’t have known otherwise.

It was late summer. Auriella had been out hunting, and came back with a mouse and a rabbit to show for it. She saw Daragh curled up in between the exposed roots of a great oak tree. She went over to him and placed her catches down in front of him. He didn’t respond. A flicker of worry rose in her. It wasn’t like Daragh not to acknowledge her presence with as little as a flick of the ear.

“Daragh?” No response. A sense of dread filled her. She nudged his shoulder anxiously, once, twice. There was no response. Even in the warm summer air, his body was cold, his limbs stiff. Auriella cried out despairingly. Why was it that everyone died except her? Why? She let out a mournful howl. After so long keeping her feelings in, she just let them come out through her howl. She mourned for Thea, for Alaric and for Daragh.

Auriella collected her prey and set off downstream. She and Daragh resided on the mountainous side of the river and she glanced across it to see the land turn to plains. The forest grew thicker on the side she walked on. She settled down for a while by herself, hunting, sleeping and eating alone, sometimes on higher ground, but never going to the river to re-live her now deep-rooted fear of moving water and the ice that took hold over it in the thick of winter. She spent winter on higher ground, staying in the mountains and barely noticing the change of seasons. Spring gradually came back to the land and Auriella decided to keep moving downstream as her second year mark approached. It was then that she noticed territory markers and felt the presence of other wolves. Curious, she continued further and, out of her curiosity, she came across the Hemlock Creek Pack.
